Facilities

One of the uses of resources are to build facilities. Facilities are structures that can only be built upon planets. Most facilities can only be built on habitable worlds. Planets have a fixed amount of land available for building facilities so plan accordingly. Each building takes up one unit of land and serves a different purpose.
  • Defenses  -  protect your world against enemy invasion. Before a planet can be conquered, all defenses must be destroyed. Defenses are designed to take a considerable amount of damage from enemy ships and protect the other facilities on the surface. Defenses do not return fire to enemy ships - instead they buy time for you to fly forces in to counter the enemy attack.

  • Communications Operations  -  provide tactical support to your ships in space. You need a specific number of Comm Ops for each ship you have in operation. If you do not have enough Comm Ops, communication with your ships may suffer interference or you may lose contact with your ships entirely.

  • Espionage  -  aids you in victory over your opponents. You can build espionage facilities that house covert operations. Your spies can be assigned to perform different tasks. The more espionage facilities you have, the faster those tasks will be completed. Intelligence facilities can only be built on habitable planets.

  • Mines  -  produce resources on a mining planet. Each turn one mine produces one unit of whatever resource is available on the planet these are built upon. Mines can only be built on uninhabitable planets, stars and asteroids.

  • Observatories  -  are used both for mapping the area immediately around the planet and also work to discover other solar systems through astronomy.

  • Research  -  facilities upgrade your weapons, shields, engines and ship designs. Engineers and scientists use these facilities to research new technologies. The more facilities you construct, the faster research is completed. Research facilities can only be built on habitable worlds.

  • Shipyards  -  build the ships that you need to conquer other planets and protect your own. The more shipyards you have, the faster your ships will be built. Shipyards can only be built on habitable worlds.

  • Turrets  -  attack enemy ships in direct orbit of the planet. Having turrets does not protect your planet against being conquered.

BUILDING NEW FACILITIES

Construction of facilities occurs immediately on your home world. If the buildings are destined for that home world, they are immediately usable. Otherwise, the buildings must be shipped to the remote world that ordered them. This may take one or more turns depending on how efficient your drones are. On all planets other than your home world, there is an option to see construction status - which will show you how close to completion your new buildings are.

DESTROYING FACILITIES

If you no longer need certain facilities or you just need extra minerals in a pinch, you can destroy facilities. Facility destruction happens instantaneously. By destroying buildings, you gain back most (but not all) of the minerals used to build the facility. You will always gain back all of the land that was occupied by those facilities.
